Living and Thriving on the Spectrum

Evan: All You Need Is Love

As I enter the chaos of the working world — or try to anyway (see my mom’s last blog post) — I realize how lucky I am to have my life centered around God. Jesus brings great comfort in times of uncertainty. Our church started a daily Bible reading plan a couple of years ago. Last year, as a body we tackled the New Testament one chapter at a time. For the next two years, we will all be reading the Old Testament two chapters each day. Right now we are reading Deuteronomy and recently finished Numbers. It is interesting just how many specific rules are laid out for Israelites in these books. I keep thinking how lucky we are today to be in the Church era. When Jesus came down to live among us to teach us and save us, He knew how hard these rules were on people. I am certain that Jesus saw just how flawed we really are, but He loves us just the same. I always think how He simplified the law for us. In Matthew 22:37-41, Jesus declares that the most important commandment is: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” And He proclaims the second most important is: “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”

I try to keep this in mind every single day. If we all followed Jesus’ two commandments, there would be no need for all the other commandments and laws, because we would be doing exactly what God wants us to do. I try to help people when I can, and show people the love of God through my actions. I want to be a light in the world. There is enough darkness already, so the light that can be shown by the grace of God is desperately needed. My pastor often reminds us that God is love, and that three-word statement brings me great joy. I hope others will read this and know just how loved they are by God.
